Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Ms MARTIN - 1999-02-23

I refer the minister to the independent Auditor-General’s report tabled last Thursday. Will the Treasurer explain why the Country Liberal Party told Territorians in 1993 it had loaned Northbrick Pty Ltd $641 268 of taxpayers money? I was staggered to read in the Auditor-General’s Report that the Treasurer had wiped the slate of Northbrick to the tune of $950 000. I ask the Treasurer why did the County Liberal Party administration misstate the amount it had loaned to Northbrick by $300 000, and how can it justify blowing $950 000 of taxpayers’ money in this way?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I have no confidence whatsoever in the way the Leader of the Opposition interprets information that is provided to her, even in the form of a written statement by the Auditor-General. I will look at the matter and get some detailed information to her.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr Stirling interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order, the member for Nhulunbuy!

Mr REED: If members could at least, if nothing else, demonstrate a few good manners in front of the students who are here today, I am sure they would appreciate it.

Members interjecting.

Mr REED: I will provide a response to the honourable the Leader of the Opposition. I will most likely put it in writing because of her incapacity to interpret what is said in this House. I will include it - to pick up the interjection - in the Parliamentary Record. But, I will provide an answer to the honourable member.
