Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Ms MARTIN - 2000-02-24

The Chief Justice has today indicated he has decided not to disqualify himself from the bench in this case before him. The Chief Minister’s corruption comments were so blatantly untrue that it was considered that no reasonable person would believe them.

The reputation of this Attorney-General cannot be salvaged. Public confidence must be restored in the justice system and the only way for that to happen in the Northern Territory is for the Attorney-General to resign. How can this Attorney-General continue in the position of first law officer when his comments as Attorney-General are considered so unbelievable?

Will the Attorney-General, to save the integrity of our justice system, resign?

ANSWER

The answer is no.
