1. MEETING:
The Assembly met at 10.00 h, pursuant to resolution of the Assembly, dated Thursday 4 December 1997. The Speaker, the Honourable L M Braham, took the Chair.

2. PRAYERS.

3. FILMING IN THE CHAMBER:
The Speaker advised Honourable Members that permission had been given to Channel 8 and to Imparja to take file footage during Question Time this day.

4. DISTINGUISHED VISITORS:
The Speaker (Mrs Braham) drew attention to the presence in the Speaker’s Gallery of the Hon Alex Somlyay, Federal Minister for the Territories;
Mr Bern Kilgariff, former Senator for the Northern Territory and former Speaker of this House; and Mr Dave Pollock, former Member for Macdonnell.

On behalf of Honourable Members, the Speaker extended a warm welcome to the distinguished visitors.

5. CONDOLENCE - MR ROGER LEVINGE DEAN, CBE - MOTION AGREED TO:
The Speaker informed Honourable Members of the death on 7 January 1998, of Roger Levinge Dean, CBE, former Administrator of the Northern Territory from November 1964 to 1970.

The Chief Minister (Mr Stone), by leave, moved - That this Assembly express its deep regret at the death of Roger Levinge Dean, a former Member of the Commonwealth
Parliament from 1949 to 1964, and place on record its appreciation of his long and distinguished service to the people of Australia and, in particular, the people of the
Northern Territory during his term as Administrator from 1964 to 1970 and tender its profound sympathy to his daughter, Julia, and son, Michael. (Paper 223)

6. CONDOLENCE - KATHERINE FLOOD VICTIMS - MOTION AGREED TO:
The Treasurer (Mr Reed), by leave, moved - That this Assembly -

(1) places on record its deepest sympathy to the families and relatives of the four people who died as a result of the Australia Day floods in the Katherine/Daly River Region;
and expresses its concern and ongoing support for thousands of Katherine residents whose lives were totally disrupted by the trauma caused by the floods, resulting in
the loss of all their worldly possessions; and

(2) expresses its thanks to the people and governments in Australia and overseas who sent messages of sympathy and support and who donated, so generously, money
and materials and volunteered assistance to help the people of Katherine in the aftermath of this disastrous flood. (Paper 224)

Minister for Tourism in addition to his other portfolio responsibilities.

10. KATHERINE AND DALY RIVER REGIONS FLOOD - STATEMENT NOTED:
The Treasurer (Mr Reed) made a Statement relating to the floods which affected Katherine, the Katherine and Daly River regions on 26 January 1998. (Paper 234)

Mr Reed moved - That this Assembly expresses its sincere appreciation to all victims of the Australia Day floods in Katherine, the Katherine region and the
Daly River communities whose self-control and courage averted greater loss of life, and to the Defence Forces, emergency workers, Territory and
Commonwealth Government employees and volunteers whose selfless dedication prevented this disaster from turning into a tragedy of even greater proportions.
