1. MEETING:
The Assembly met at 10am. The Speaker, the Honourable L. M. Braham, took the Chair.

3. MINISTERIAL REPORTS:
Legislative Assembly Member’s Superannuation Scheme, Review: The Chief Minister (Ms Martin) made a report on a proposal to review the Superannuation Scheme applying to Members of the Legislative Assembly.
Paper tabled: Ms Martin laid on the Table the following Paper –
Terms of Reference, Legislative Assembly Member’s Superannuation Scheme, Review (Paper 348).

Mr Burke responded thereto.
Ms Martin responded accordingly.

Tiwi Islands Local Government, Management Issues: The Minister for Local Government (Mr Ah Kit) made a report on the operational and financial management issues of the Local Government Council, Tiwi Islands.
Dr Lim responded thereto.
Mr Wood responded thereto.
Mr Ah Kit responded accordingly.

Racing Ministers Conference, Adelaide 17 May 2002: The Minister for Racing, Gaming and Licensing (Mr Stirling) made a report on the issues discussed at the Racing Ministers conference in Adelaide last Friday, 17 May 2002 relating to regulatory controls for racing and betting in Australia and across border betting issues of Australian States.
Mr Baldwin responded thereto.
Mr Stirling responded accordingly.

Appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police: The Minister of Police Fire and Emergency Services (Mr Stirling) on the recent appointment of Mr Bruce Wernham to the position of Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Mr Burke responded thereto.
Mr Stirling responded accordingly.

Ministerial Reports noted, pursuant to Sessional Orders.

4. RT HON SIR JOHN GREY GORTON, GCMG, AC, CH – CONDOLENCE MOTION – MOTION AGREED TO:
The Speaker advised Members of the death on 19 May 2002 of the Rt Hon Sir John Grey Gorton, GCMG, AC, CH a former Prime Minister of Australia from 1968 to 1971.

The Chief Minister (Ms Martin), by leave, moved – That this Assembly express its deep regret at the death of the Rt Hon Sir John Grey Gorton, GCMG, AC, CH, Prime Minister of Australia from 1968 to 1971; Senator for Victoria from 1949 to 1968 and a Member of the House of Representatives from 1968 to 1975 and place on record its appreciation of his long and distinguished service to the people of Australia and tender its profound sympathy to his family.
Ms Martin thereupon addressed the Assembly.

As a mark of respect Members stood in their places for one minute, in silence.

5. STATUTE LAW REVISION BILL 2002 (Serial 47):
The Order of the Day having been read for resumption of debate on the question – That the Bill be now read a second time –

Leave granted for a motion for the third reading of the Bill to be moved forthwith.
On the motion of the Minister for Justice and Attorney-General (Dr Toyne) the Bill was read a third time and passed to be a proposed law.

6. POLICE ADMINISTRATION AMENDMENT BILL (No. 2) 2002 (Serial 59) – BILL WITHDRAWN:
The Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services (Mr Stirling) withdrew the notice relating to the presentation of the Bill.

7. VISITORS:
The Speaker advised members of the presence in the public galleries of representatives of Aboriginal Health Services, Aboriginal Medical Services Association of the Northern Territory and the Northern Territory Aboriginal Health Forum.
On behalf of all Members the Speaker extended a warm welcome to the visitors.

8. THE NEW FACE OF INDIGENOUS HEALTH – MINISTERIAL STATEMENT – STATEMENT NOTED:
The Minister for Health and Community Services (Ms Aagaard) made a statement relating to improvements in health for indigenous Territorians and the need to network with indigenous and other groups in the Territory.
Mrs Aagaard moved – That the Assembly take note of the Statement.
