1. MEETING:
- The Assembly met at 10.00 a.m., pursuant to adjournment. The Speaker, the Honourable T.R. McCarthy, took the Chair.
2. PRAYERS.
3. PETITION:
- The Member for Nhulunbuy (Mr Stirling) presented a petition from 1037 petitioners requesting the Assembly directs the Commissioner for Public Employment to enter into a separate enterprise bargaining agreement with the Northern Territory Branch of the Australian Education Union.
- Petition read.
4. DISTINGUISHED VISITOR:
- The Speaker (Mr McCarthy) drew the attention of Honourable Members to the presence in the gallery of the Honourable Kevin Lyons, former Speaker, Deputy Premier and Minister of the Tasmanian House of Assembly.
On behalf of Honourable Members, the Speaker extended a warm welcome to the distinguished visitor.
5. VISITORS:
- The Speaker (Mr McCarthy) drew the attention of Honourable Members to the presence in the gallery of Associate Diploma students from the Faculty of Aboriginal and Islander Studies at the Northern Territory University, and their lecturer Mr Lester Thompson; and Year 6 and 7 students from Holy Family School and their teachers Ms Debbie Dunne and Ms Gail Smith.
- On behalf of Honourable Members, the Speaker extended a warm welcome to the visitors.

- The Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mrs Hickey), pursuant to Standing Order 57, made a personal explanation relating to comments made by the Chief Minister (Mr Stone) during Question Time this day regarding the group Women of the Barkly and a document produced by the group.
- The Minister for Health Services (Mr Finch) gave a supplementary answer to a question asked by the Member for Nelson (Mrs Padgham-Purich) during Question Time on Tuesday 17 October 1995.
10. SERVICES TO TERRITORY BUSINESSES - MINISTERIAL STATEMENT - STATEMENT NOTED:
- The Minister for Asian Relations, Trade and Industry (Mr Poole) made a statement relating to the services provided by the Department of Asian Relations, Trade and Industry to the Territory business community (Paper 2008).
- Mr Poole moved - That the Assembly take note of the Statement.

12. MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE - SEPARATE ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT FOR NORTHERN TERRITORY TEACHERS:
- The Speaker informed the Assembly that the Member for Nhulunbuy (Mr Stirling) had proposed the following definite matter of public importance be submitted to the Assembly for discussion this day -
- the failure of the Northern Territory Government to respond adequately to the legitimate demands of Territory teachers, in particular their demand for a separate enterprise agreement, resulting in continuing disruption to education services in the Northern Territory.
The proposed discussion having received the necessary support -
The Speaker called on Mr Stirling to address the Assembly.
