Assistance to Victims of CrimeMs Carney to MINISTER for Justice and Attorney-GeneralQUESTION I would be grateful if you would provide the answers to the following questions in relation to the Justice Department's Budget for 2004-05. In order to assist you, please note that this question relates to output group: 1.0 Legal Services (1.1: Solicitor for the NT).Under the key heading ‘Key variations’ on p115, it states that ‘Costs for the legal services output group are expected to be contained due to implementation of the review of the Crimes Victims Assistance Scheme…’ Changes to the Scheme were made on 22nd August 2002, and came into operation on 1st November that year. Please provide the following information in relation to the Scheme:
1. In BP#3 for the year 2002-03, it was estimated that ‘Assistance to Victims of Crime’ was $6.37m and that that would reduce to $4m in 2003-04 -
(a) What was the actual spend on assistance to victims of crime for the financial year 2003-04 likely to be; and
(b) What is the estimated breakdown of the $4m in terms of legal costs and monies paid to victims.ANSWER
