188. Victims of Crime - legal costs and monies paid to victims

QUESTION

I would be grateful if you would provide the answers to the following questions in relation to the Justice Department's Budget for 2004-05. In order to assist you, please note that this question relates to output group: 1.0 Legal Services (1.1: Solicitor for the NT).

1. In BP#3 for the year 2004-05, it is estimated that $3.5m will be spent on assistance to victims of crime, reducing from $4m in the 2003-04 year –

(a) What is the estimated break down of the $3.5m in terms of legal costs and monies paid to victims;

(b) What were the costs of administering the Scheme in the 2002-03 financial year and what legal costs were paid during this period;

(c) What are the estimated costs of amending the Scheme in the 2003-04 financial year, and what is the expected amount for legal costs to be paid;

(d) How many applications and/or victims made claims for compensation in the following financial years:

I. 2001-02
II. 2002-03
III. 2003-04 (estimated)

(e) How much was paid in legal costs for applications during the financial year 2002-03 and what is the expected figure for the 2003-04 financial year;

(f) How many applications were heard by Judicial Registrars during the financial year 2002-03 and how many are expected to be heard by Judicial Registrars for the financial year 2003-04;

(g) How many applications were heard by Magistrates during the financial years 2001-02 and 2002-03 and how many are expected to be heard by Magistrates for the 2003-04 financial year; and

(h) For the financial years 2002-03 and 2003-04 how many applications settled ‘pre-Court’, and how does this compare with applications for the financial year 2001-02.
