Costs of Horn and Arnold Inquiries

1. What was the total cost to the Department of Health and Community Services to:

(a) conduct the inquiries involving Dr Philip Nitschke; and

(b) conduct a defence of the Department of Health and Community Services before the Australian Senate investigation, including costs of travel to Canberra by staff from the Minister's Office and the Department and travel and other allowances.

2. What other costs were associated with the inquiries involving Dr Nitschke.

ANSWER

1. Costs to the Department of Health and Community Services for:

(a) inquiries involving Dr Philip Nitschke - $17,316.00
(b) the Australian Senate investigation $59,914.20

TOTAL - $77,230.20

2. There were significant costs in terms of time spent by many senior Departmental officers in all inquiries involving Dr Nitschke. To collate and cost this commitment of staff time would greatly increase the cost to the Department.
